I am extremely irritated by the misuse of the apostrophe. I think a lot of people can’t resist the urge to use it, that it perhaps should be somewhere, so let’s put it there. I have seen so many signs such as “TV’s 50% off” or “employees’ only”. If the OPP wanted to do something constructive, they should police grammar. If the fine for following a fire truck too closely is $2,000, then a misspelled sign should be at $5,000.
Someone could have a blog dedicated to mispelled and funny signs in the area. My friend and I always laugh about these…a recent one at a store near me was “Under New Mangment”.
Some businesses include misspellings on their signs on purpose to attract attention, but most of the time the owners can’t spell or place an apostrophe correctly to save their lives.

You could do a whole series of misspelled store names & signs in Windsor. Many of which are downtown (the current most notable one is the “Drunkin’ Burrito”). Windsor is quite possibly the moron capitol of Canada.
How about the number of people who spell you’re, your…..very annoying.

My pet peeve- people who say “Fords; Chryslers etc. They are not possessive nor plural people!
I agree with Joe, what’s the purpose of pluralizing automotive company names? It’s only done in Windsor.
my brother once called me while on a road trip out east only to tell me of his encounter with a chinese resturant with the name of “HO-LEE-CHOW”
which if you read it right is “HOLY CHOW!” lol
with the Ford’s and Chrysler’s…..it only works in windsor and detroit because these are their homes, and the people that owned them were local. does it mean it’s right? no, of course not. but, i suppose it was Henery Ford’s company to do with what he pleased, so why not?

Both of those piss me off. If you’re going to open a store, do you bloody homework. It’s not a wonder our kids have poor english grades anymore, the bastardization of the language is in our faces every day. I admire the work ethic of people who immigrate to Canada and open businesses. It’s their right to make a living. It’s not anyone’s right to mess up the language. The other problem is our proximity to the states, our language gets Americanized. In Canada we speak the Queen’s English.

If you are on Wyandotte near Jefferson, look at where the old Alphakor computer store used to be. Take a look at the sign on the upper right side of the building near the roof. “Satisfaction” is spelt “Sastisfaction”. I mentioned that to one of their people and they had no idea.
And in case anyone is wondering “spelt” is proper English, not “spelled”. I learnt that a long time ago.

Steve… or “than” and “then”?…. let us face it… The English language is weird. Of course you meant ‘their’ and not ‘thier’…. just a ‘typo’ and not a misspelling?
The favourite around these parts (Tronna) is in front of restaurants, saying Dinning Room…
I know it is not their job but the sign companies should at least catch some of these mispellings. A bad one a few years back was a restaurant at Central and Seminole called the “Transilvania Restaurant”. It had an image of a haunted castle on it. Pretty funny, but for all the effort you’d think they’d get the spelling right.
let’s count the number of typos in these postings (beyond the obvious ones)..not to mention poor sentence structure!

C’mon Chris, we are probably casually sloppy and not overly concerned about grammar, etc.
After all, our comments are NOT emblazoned in large, often illuminated, characters and in front of a public structure for the whole (passing) world to view…

I have a girlfriend who had this tatoo on her arm – “This to shall pass”. There is no room to add the extra o either. At least a sign can be taken down, or painted over.

I’ve driven past this for more than a year and have wanted to post my photos somewhere, glad someone has done so.
I’m sure it has been brought to the attention of the vendor but come on, how much does a sign cost? The sign company should have caught it beforehand. And where are the sign police? I have witnessed many times business owners having to replace their signage for various reasons, codes, etc. Shouldn’t spelling be a crucial element?
If the vendor did do it as a gimmick for business, well shame on them for bastardizing the language, encouraging stupidity to sell cigarettes and pop.

i have a friend who has the worst english he spells and says the word “them” as thum and says intrust instead of intrest i think he’s a hillbilly

OK, the worst one that I’m reminded of all the time is Hi Neighbor, this is Canada! Where is the “u”???? Also, Dan, spelt is a type of grain, if using spelt in place of spelled, it is latin, not proper english.

That’s odd. I was always taught spelt was a proper past participle of spell.

What’s the proper past participle of “pasteries”? And more importantly, can you say it ten times – fast…
To answer Tim about why Drunkin’ opposed to Drunken. The name seemed to clear to be associated as Drunken, and more friendly as Drunkin’, plus the miss spelling tied into it as well. Seemed more fun and not defined spelled the correct way.
